Employable Vs Deployable
I was reading an article where the writer says students are now expected to be deployable not just employable. It was not so earlier. Companies were complaining that students are not employable, meaning; students lacked the essential qualities to become their employees.
Due to shortage of skilled man power in the market, companies were recruiting freshers from the colleges and taking them to their companies and training them. This used to be quite a burden. It could take anywhere from six months to one year before a fresher could be deployed on a project. The company starts earning money only when the employee is deployed on a project. The company makes a loss on people who are not deployed (also know as sitting on bench). The companies were ready to bear that cost of training, paying students about 20,000 a month, giving hostel facilities, arranging hi-tech air conditioned class rooms, and sparing senior staff to give tutorial classes.
Now things have changed. There is plenty of trained workforce available on the streets of Hyderabad who can be screened, shortlisted, hired and deployed within a week. That saves the company lots of time and money. Plus, available manpower in the market is ready to take up temporary jobs. So this workforce can be hired for a project and fired after the project with no strings attached.
Best Wishes,
Rr
P.S. what does bench mean?
In football (soccer) 11 people play the game and there are 5-6 extras who sit on a bench beside the ground waiting for a chance to play if and when one of the 11 players gets hurt or tiered. Like wise, in software industry, some people are deployed on projects and some are waiting for a chance to get deployed. Even though such people are waiting in a fully furnished A/C office, they are still referred to as ‘sitting on bench’.
