Goa University Deparment of Biotechnology The Department runs an M.Sc. Marine Biotechnology programme and also awards Doctorate degrees in Biotechnology. The M.Sc. programme was initiated in 1988 and is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The Department, having excelled in the manpower training programme, was selected to double the intake of students and enjoys (since inception to date) continued funding from the DBT for the M.Sc. programme. The Department is also one of the select 19 centres to have been awarded DBT 'JRF' positions out of the 50 DBT centers in India in 2004. The M.Sc. students from the Department have excelled at CSIR/UGC/GATE exams, with nearly 100% CSIR/UGC clearance, while some of the students have also been placed in the top 10 at the GATE exams. The courses offered for the M.Sc. programme are covered in 4 semesters and approximately 85% of the syllabus fits in with the DBT model curriculum for M.Sc. General Biotechnology. Independent research topics are undertaken by the M.Sc. students as a part of their curriculum through the 3rd & 4th Semester and students are also assisted for placement for their summer training in R&D laboratories of recognized Institutes/Industries after the second semester. The Department is actively involved in R&D work and 2 patents have already been filed in addition to several publications. The research thrust areas in the Department are: 1) Biodegradation of oil spills & tar balls by microbial consortia The Department has excellent teaching/research facilities and has active collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa. It has also been identified by the Australian High Commission for future international research collaborations. | ||||
